Founded on 17 December, 1878 and named after Mr. Thomas Snow (Aide-de-camp to Governor Jervois), the township of Snowtown is situated in the Mid-North of South Australia. It is approximately 150 kilometres from the state capital of Adelaide.
The area is primarily a farming area, with cereals and sheep being the main product. Salt is also harvested from the southern end of Lake Bumbunga near the township of Lochiel, 18 kilometres to the south.
The area is bounded by the grape growing area of the Clare Valley, 45 kilometres to the east and by the Copper Triangle, 62 kilometres to the west.
The township of Snowtown has a population of approximately 500. National Highway 1 goes past the town
